The BMABA
Why BMABA
Raising standards
The Defensive Fitness Academy (DFA) operates under independent UK governance to ensure high standards of instruction, safeguarding, and professional conduct.
The British Martial Arts & Boxing Association (BMABA) is the UK’s leading independent, apolitical, not-for-profit body dedicated to raising standards across all martial arts and boxing.
The BMABA is recognised by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) as meeting the standards expected within the UK sport and physical activity sector and has been approved as a CIMSPA Training Provider Partner.
The BMABA exists to improve instructor quality, student safety, and professional governance. Its emphasis is on high standards for instructors, robust safeguarding, and structured oversight ensuring training environments are safe, accountable, and professionally run.
The DFA’s affiliation with the BMABA reflects our commitment to operating to the highest professional standards and to providing safe, responsible, and effective training environments for everyone we work with.
Higher Standards
A professional framework
There is currently no single statutory regulator for martial arts in the UK.
As a result, standards can vary significantly and, in some cases, fall short of what students should reasonably expect. In what can often be an unregulated and inconsistent landscape, the BMABA provides clear frameworks for professionalism, insurance, safeguarding, and instructor conduct.
No other independent martial arts organisation in the UK is doing more to improve standards or drive meaningful change across a membership body of this scale. The BMABA’s work places safeguarding and professional responsibility at the centre of martial arts practice, leading to higher-quality instruction and safer training for all.
Better instruction
Filling the gap
The BMABA places a strong emphasis on high-quality instruction and coaching practice, recognising that effective teaching requires more than technical ability alone. And while technical competency is an important foundation, it does not automatically translate into effective instruction.
Many organisations within the sector focus primarily on the technical progression of their instructors, often placing less emphasis on instructor coaching skills, teaching standards, or the long-term development of students.
The BMABA’s model addresses this gap by promoting instructional competence, ethical coaching, and professional responsibility as core requirements of membership.
All DFA instructors are vetted by the BMABA and their credentials can be independently verified on the BMABA national register.
